Fall 2010- Internship/Student Teaching Application Information
Note - Students currently enrolled in Intern I do not need to re-apply for Intern II
A mandatory K-12 undergraduate orientation to the application will be held at the following times in Killian 104
- Monday, January 25 at 5:30pm
- Tuesday, January 26 at 8:30am
- Wednesday, January 27 at 8:30am
- Thursday, January 28 at 5:30pm
Much of the orientation content is also available in an online wiki. Your username is your catamount email ID (the part before @catamount.wcu.edu) and the password is the one used for MyCat. If you have problems logging in contact IT Services at 227-7487.
Graduate, licensure-only and BK program students should meet with their advisor in lieu of this orientation session, though they may find some information in the orientation beneficial such as résumé building and background check instructions.
All students should meet with their advisors and complete the Application and related documents for submission by February 26. Do not wait until the last minute as advisors and schools cannot always meet with you immediately. Be certain to review the application instructions included with the form for a list of all application packet requirements. Note that the Background Check must be completed within 6 months prior to beginning your internship or students teaching experience so wait until after February 15, 2010 before requesting this. Résumés should be sent to Mardy Ashe (mashe@email.wcu.edu) for review prior to submission on TaskStream and the printed submission with the application packet. Students employed in the school where they will be completing their Student Teaching should submit a Site Supervisor Designation Form in lieu of the résumé and background check. Students seeking licensure in Elementary or Middle Grades education and those who will complete a year-long internship in the same classroom are also required to submit a visitation log of potential placement locations. All students should visit potential schools prior to application to ensure a "good fit" with the school culture and philosophies.
Buncombe County Applicants Only! - if you are not a school system employee, you will need to submit your Health Certificate and a release form with your application packet. Buncombe County Schools will not consider you application without this. Since all Buncombe County applications must be submitted to the school system together, we will not be able to wait for these on a one on one basis. If these forms are not included, you will need to be placed in another school system. Applicants for all other school systems should follow the instructions below concerning submission of their Health Certificates.
Placements are made approximately 1-3 months after the application deadline depending on the school. Once the placement is made, students not employed by the host school should meet with the Cooperating Teacher to complete the Internship/Student Teaching Agreement. A Health Certificate should be submitted to the Principal on the first day of the Internship/Student Teaching unless requested by the district central office sooner. You can complete the required physical at the WCU Student Health Center.
Students should review our liability insurance policy. We do recommend that students obtain liability insurance. Liability insurance is included as a membership benefit with the student chapter of the North Carolina Association of Educators.
Licensure Requirements during Student Teaching/Internship Experience:
In addition to the Internship/Students Teaching experience and graduate application process, students need to complete a licensure application packet. Contact Barbara Schade for more information at bschade@email.wcu.edu or 828-227-2000 far in advance of completing the program.
