Spring 2010- Internship/Student Teaching
*** The application deadline will be Friday, September 25, 2009 ***
A mandatory K-12 undergraduate orientation wiki to the application process is available online. Use your catamount email address username (the part before "@catamount.wcu.edu") and password. If you receive an error you will need to reset your pin number - contact IT servics at 227-7487 if you need assistance accessing the wiki. Graduate, licensure-only and BK program students should meet with their advisor in lieu of this online orientation session, though they may find some information in the online training beneficial such as résumé building and background check instructions.
All students should meet with their advisors and complete the Application and related documents for submission by September 25. Be certain to review the application instructions included with the form for a list of all application packet requirements. Note that the Background Check must be completed within 6 months prior to beginning your internship or students teaching experience. Résumés should be sent to Mardy Ashe (mashe@email.wcu.edu) for review prior to submission on TaskStream and the printed submission with the application packet. Students employed in the school where they will be completing their Student Teaching should submit a Site Supervisor Designation Form in lieu of the résumé and background check. Students seeking licensure in Elementary or Middle Grades education and those who will complete a year-long internship in the same classroom are also required to submit a visitation log of potential placement locations. All students should visit potential schools prior to application to ensure a "good fit" with the school culture and philosophies.
Placements are made approximately 1-3 months after the application deadline depending on the school. Once the placement is made, students not employed by the host school should meet with the Cooperating Teacher to complete the Internship/Student Teaching Agreement. A Health Certificate should be submitted to the Principal on the first day of the Internship/Student Teaching. You can complete the required physical at the WCU Student Health Center.
Students should review our liability insurance policy. We do recommend that students obtain liability insurance. Liability insurance is included as a membership benefit with the student chapter of the North Carolina Association of Educators.
Licensure Requirements during Student Teaching/Internship Experience:
In addition to the Internship/Students Teaching experience and graduate application process, students need to complete a licensure application packet. Contact Barbara Schade for more information at bschade@email.wcu.edu or 828-227-2000 far in advance of completing the program.
