Western's Week of Welcome is your opportunity to get involved in campus activities and learn a little bit about your new home. Events are scheduled to familiarize you with new facilities, give you the chance to interact with other students, and have a lot of fun. So come out and experience Western at its best!

Friday, August 15th  
7 am - 5 pm Freshmen Move-In (Residence Halls) Freshmen move into your residence halls, meet your roommate, and begin your new life as a Catamount!

5 - 6 pm 

Convocation (Ramsey) 

The freshman class of 2008 will come together for your first experience with university academic life. This will be the first opportunity for many of you to meet the chancellor and members of the faculty.  This will also be your first dialog about the summer reading assignment "Three Cups of Tea."
 6 - 8 pm Dinner/Say Goodbye to Families  It's time to enjoy one last dinner with your family before saying goodbye to start your new life as a college student. 
 8 - 9 pm Residence Hall Floor Meetings (Residence Halls)  All residential students will meet your RA and other students living on your floor. You will discuss the rules and regulations of the Residence Halls and learn a little about the other members of your new community.  
 9 pm RSA First Night Out (Grandroom, 3rd Floor UC)  Join members of RSA on the UC Lawn for food, fun, and interactive games.
     
Saturday, August 16th   
9 - 11:30 am Freshman Class Assembly (FPAC)  See your RA to find out what time you are to attend the Freshman Class Assembly. Meet PAWS, the WCU Cheerleaders, and renowned speaker Will Keim. 
Noon - 2 Lunch  
4:30 - 8 pm Valley Ballyhoo (UC Lawn)  This is WCU's opening of the year party! Come out and enjoy live music, lawn toys/games, find out about opportunities for campus and community involvement, join a student organization, and have a great time! 
7:30 pm Kudzu Productions Presents "Laundry & Bourbon" and "Lone Star" (Niggli Theatre) 

The Kudzu Players will present James McLure's two darkly comic one-acts which weave the interconnecting stories of three men and three women on one hot summer day in Maynard, Texas. The production includes adult themes and language and seating is limited. $5 Students and $7 Adults

9 pm Suenalo (UC Lawn)  A band from South Florida that has a unique blend of Afro-Cuban, Latin, R&B, rock and hip-hop. They have the natives dancing in Miami and will have you dancing as well.
     
Sunday, August 17th   
Morning  Join/Participation in WCU Faith Communities  There are many different Communities of Faith around WCU which will be holding services on Sunday morning.  For more information or to locate a local place of worship visit http://www.wcu.edu/111.asp.
1 pm Campus Recreation Center Grand Opening (CRC)  Join students, faculty, and staff in celebrating the Grand Opening of the brand new CRC.  Come out and visit the facility for the first time and see what it has to offer.  Whether you want to enjoy the suspended walking track, aerobics, or strength training area there is something for everyone in the new CRC.

4 pm Walk Your Class Schedule Tour (Alumni Tower on the UC Lawn)  Bring your schedule and look for the Entourage staff (the students in black shirts) at the Alumni Tower.  The Admissions Office's Entourage staff will lead a brief walking tour of the academic buildings and help you locate where you need to go for classes.  In case of rain just bring your umbrella because the tour must go on and participating students will be entered into a drawing for prizes!
4 pm  "Find Your Way" Wellness Walk (CRC) Start and finish at the new campus recreation center, pick up a map and get it stamped at 10 wellness stations on campus, qualify to win fabulous prizes including a Specialized Mountain bike, a raft trip with Base Camp, and more!
Wear comfy shoes and start early to finish by 7pm!  Sponsored by the Wellness Council 
9 pm  Movie on the UC Lawn: "The Strangers"  Free Outdoor Movie
     
Monday, August 18th   
All Day  First Day of Classes   
4 pm  "Climb the Wall" Clinic at CRC  Enjoy Western's new 48 ft. climbing wall and get some tips from experienced climbers. 
6 pm "Get Started" with CRC Personal Trainers  Want to get in shape?  Lose weight?  Get Stronger?  Not sure where to start?  Come meet the personal trainers at the CRC and see about setting up an individual session and get off to a great start. 
 7 pm  The B.E.S.T. Experience (UC Multipurpose Room)   Calling all Freshmen and Transfer students!!  Come meet the 2008-2009 Western’s Black Educational Support Team and learn how you can have the B.E.S.T. experience at WCU and at the annual Project C.A.R.E. Retreat! 
8 - 11 pm  Cats Den Fall Opening Concert with Free Play Games  Come out and play FREE on any of the 12 arcade games, Nintendo Wii, pool tables, foosball table, or table tennis while enjoying the band Florez.
   
Tuesday, August 19th   
6 - 7 pm  Group X Sample Class at CRC  Can't decide what Group X class is right for you? Come out and try and little bit of all of them. 
3 - 5 pm  Academic Success Centers Welcome Freshmen (Stillwell & Hunter Library)  Learn about the different support centers WCU offers to help all students succeed.  From academic tutoring to assistance with math and writing, our staff is dedicated to helping all students reach their full potential. 
7 - 9 pm Cat Fair - Student Activity/Organization Fair (UC)  Get involved in student and campus activities by joining a student organization.  See who has the same interests as you or expand your horizons and find something new.
     
  Wednesday, August 20th  
4 pm CRC Climbing Wall Open  The new climbing wall will be open for any member of the university to try out. 
6 pm  CLAW Sponsored Wellness Beach Party (Reid Pool) Put on your swimsuit and get wet at the Wellness "Beach Party" at the Reid Pool.
     
Thursday, August 21st   
8:30 - 4:30 The Doctor Can See You Now  Meet your health care team, get immunized if needed, get a tour of the center, and enjoy some refreshments. 
4 pm  "Climb the Wall" Clinic at CRC  Always wanted to try rock climbing but never had the chance?  Well here is your opportunity to try out the new climbing wall and learn a new skill.

6 pm Meet the Cats  Come Meet the Cats! Your 2008 Catamount Football team will be hosting a controlled Practice. This is your chance to see the new Catamounts on the Gridiron before the season begins.  Concession stands will be open. New Western Carolina gear will be on sale at the stadium store.  Players, coaches, and cheerleaders will be on hand for autographs and pictures at 7:30.  Bring your camera, friends, and Catamount Spirit!
Giveaways will include posters and schedule magnets! Don't miss this sneak peak at EJ Whitmire Stadium August 21 at 6 p.m. Admission is free. For more information visit CatamountSports.com. 
     
Friday, August 22nd   
3 pm  Hip Hop with WCU Dance Team (CRC)  Meet members of the WCU Dance Team and learn a little Hip Hop! 
5 & 9 pm  UC Theater Movie: "What Happens in Vegas"  Drinks, popcorn, and a movie for $2???  That's right!  Visit the theater in the UC for some inexpensive movie entertainment. 
8 pm  One Night Stand Comedy featuring Na'im Lynn  As seen on BET's Comic View, Showtime at The Apollo, P. Diddy's Bad Boys of Comedy, and Comedy Central's Live at Gotham.
8 pm  Up All Nite at the UC 

Food, music, games, and entertainment.  Come out for a fun nite in the Whee!
