Beginning Teacher Individualized Growth Plan (IGP)

The Beginning Teacher Individualized Growth Plan (IGP) is used to document the professional growth and development of North Carolina beginning teachers. Currently, teachers in years 1–3 are required to complete an IGP annually. During the first six to eight weeks of school you will meet with your mentor or principal to develop the plan. You will participate in conferences throughout the year to reflect on your progress in meeting the goals established in your growth plan. The IGP will be updated annually, each year of the Beginning Teacher Support Program.

The following suggestions may be helpful as you prepare for developing the IGP:

  • Download a copy of the Beginning Teacher IGP (Word).
  • Review the 10 INTASC Standards.
  • Review the language of the Standards with your mentor.
  • Reflect on your teaching experience and practice relative to each standard.
  • Find out your school's due date for the IGP to be submitted for review.

Suggestions for developing the IGP:

  • Use the second page of the document to assess your strengths and weaknesses relative to each standard.
  • Work with your mentor to select the key indicators from 1 or 2 INTASC Standards on which you will focus your IGP for the first year.

The Beginning Teacher Coordinator in your school system also is a valuable resource when preparing this document.
