Substance abuse courses: Western Carolina University offers four 15-week courses that meet the substance abuse specific coursework requirements for licensure with the NCSAPPB. The courses are taught one afternoon/evening a week over a 10-15 week schedule at either the Asheville or Cullowhee campus on a rotating basis. Students are expected to first complete Addictions or SOCW 420/520 before taking the other three courses. For students who are not currently enrolled at WCU, the fee for each course is $425. (NO COLLEGE CREDIT GIVEN). Next course dates available soon.
Addictions - 6-9 p.m., Mondays, Jan. 11 - Apr. 26, 2010, in Cullowhee
Cultural Competence in Substance Abuse Treatment - Summer 2010
Science of Addiction - 2-5 p.m., Fridays, Jan. 15 Apr. 30, 2010, UNCA Campus
Methods of Substance Abuse Treatment - Fall 2010
Workshops: Students must complete four courses to meet the NCSAPPB requirements for substance abuse practice licensure, along with an 18-hour workshop. The workshop includes six hours on ethics and 12 hours on HIV/AIDS and other communicable diseases. The courses and additional workshop constitute the 180 hours of substance abuse specific education mandated by the Board, and together cover all of the competencies needed for licensure in substance abuse practice. Students must also be under the direct supervision of a NCSAPPB approved supervisor (CCS/CSI).

In addition to the four 15 week courses, the following workshops are required to cover the competencies needed for licensure in substance abuse practice. These workshops are also available for continuing education unit credit from Western Carolina University.
