Many external agencies offer grants, scholarships, and fellowships to help students study abroad, including:
Bridging Scholarships
Undergraduate students majoring in any field of study are eligible to apply for these scholarships sponsored by the Association of Teachers of Japanese. Japanese language study is not a prerequisite. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and be enrolled in a college or university in the United States.
Blakemore Foundation Grants
The Blakemore Foundation with support of the Freeman Foundation announces plans for 25-30 grants during the 2007-2008 academic year for the advanced study of modern Chinese, Japanese, Korean and SE Asian languages. Students pursuing professional, academic, or business careers that require frequent use of an Asian language may be eligible. The grant covers tuition and a stipend, plus basic living expenses.
Boren Undergraduate Scholarships and Graduate Fellowships
National Security Education Program (NSEP) David L. Boren Undergraduate Scholarships and Graduate Fellowships competitions. Created in 1991, NSEP awards undergraduate scholarships and graduate fellowships to American students for study of world regions critical to U.S. interests (including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Middle East). Boren Scholarships provide up to $20,000 for an academic year's study abroad. Boren Fellowships provide up to $30,000 for language study and international research.

DAAD Grants and Scholarships
The German Academic Exchange Service (Deutsche Akademische Austausch Dienst) offers many scholarships, travel, language, and research grants to undergraduates, graduates and post-graduates wishing to study, research and travel in Germany. Knowledge of the German language requirements varies with each grant or scholarship.

DAAD RISE Scholarships
If you're an undergraduate student, you can spend the summer working on a research project with a German PhD student, who serves as a personal and professional mentor. You'll receive a scholarship to cover living expenses, and the PhD student will help find housing. Get exposed to advanced research and learn about Germany from the inside. Make new friends and establish professional contacts, and spend your weekends exploring the heart of Europe.
Dvelo Fund
The Dvelo Fund is a fellowship program designed to give students the opportunity to study developmental issues in the underdeveloped world. The aim of the Fund is to support the education of undergraduates wishing to travel abroad in order to conduct research or become involved with the developmental efforts in that region or country. The student designs his or her own proposal and submits it along with their application. Fellowship recipients may receive up to $4,000 in direct funding.
Freeman-Asia Grant
Undergraduates who will study in a designated Asian country are eligible for this grant. Qualified undergraduates must show financial need, be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, and have at least one more semester of study at their U.S. institution when they return.
Fulbright Grants
Information on Fulbright Comprehensive Grants for U.S. citizens who are undergraduate or graduate students, doctoral candidates, young professionals or artists. Application deadline is @ October 20th
Fulbright Binational Business Program in Mexico
This program is designed to enhance the knowledge, expertise and understanding of business communities in Mexico for U.S. graduates in business, law or engineering. It combines an internship within a Mexico-based company, firm or NGO dedicated to international business with some graduate courses at a Mexican University. The Fulbright-García Robles grantees usually work as interns from 8am to 4pm five days a week in their assigned companies and attend the university two evenings a week during the program.
Requirements: Excellent spoken and written Spanish is required at the time of application; U.S. Citizenship. US/Mexican dual nationals are not eligible for this program; Candidates with a BA, M.B.A., J.D. or an M.A./M.S. in business administration, finance, economics, international relations, engineering, accounting; Some work experience in a business environment is strongly recommended.
Internships: After final selection is completed, the Commission will arrange the internship matches with the participating companies: Banorte, Cemex, Deutsche Bank, Dupont, Endeavor, Fondo Unido, Gamesa, Grupo BAL, Procter & Gamble, Rothschild Bank, Scotiabank Inverlat, among others.
Universities: Grantees are usually placed at one of the following Mexican universities: Autonomous Technological Institute of Mexico (ITAM) and the Monterey Technological Institute (ITESM).

Gilman Scholarship
The Gilman Scholarship provides awards of up to $5,000 for U.S. citizen undergraduate students at two- and four-year institutions to pursue country-based undergraduate opportunities abroad of up to one academic year. To be eligible students must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant at the time of application and cannot be studying abroad in a country currently under a U.S. Department of State Travel Warning or in Cuba. Short-term programs are eligible provided they are a minimum of four weeks in length.
Application Deadlines: April 15 - Fall/Academic Year Programs that begin between July 15 and October 15 (excluding summer-only programs); September 22 - Spring Programs that begin between December 15 and April 15
Jeannette Rankin Foundation Award
For women over 35 years of age. Grant can be used for study abroad programs.
King Olav V Norwegian-American Heritage Fund from the Sons of Norway International
For undergraduate study in Norway and for Norwegian students to study in the U.S.
National Security Education Program (NSEP) Marshall Scholarships
These scholarships and fellowships are primarily for graduate study. There are, however, awards available for undergraduate study, too. Each scholarship or fellowship has its own eligibility requirements and application deadlines. Many of the scholarships and fellowships are targeted for certain fields of study, minorities, or study abroad. Raymond Davis Scholarship from the Society for Imaging Science and Technology
The Raymond Davis Scholarship is granted to a student (or students) of imaging science or engineering for use in continuing their studies as a graduate or undergraduate. The grant is made for academic study or research in the theory or practice of imaging science.
Robert B. Bailey Minority Student Scholarship from the Council on International Educational Exchange
Rotary International Ambassadorial Scholarships
Currently, three types of scholarships are offered. Some Rotary districts may only offer one type of scholarship (or none at all); applicants must check with the local club regarding availability.
- Academic-Year Ambassadorial Scholarships provide funding for one academic year of study in another country up to US $26,000.
- Multi-Year Ambassadorial Scholarships are for two years of degree-oriented study in another country. A flat grant of US$13,000 or its equivalent is provided per year to be applied toward the costs of a degree program.
- Cultural Ambassadorial Scholarships are for either three or six months of intensive language study and cultural immersion in another country and provide funds to cover round-trip transportation, language training expenses, and homestay living arrangements up to US$12,000 and US$19,000, respectively. Applications are considered for candidates interested in studying Arabic, English, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swahili, and Swedish.
Sons of Norway Foundation Scholarships
The mission of Sons of Norway is to promote and preserve the heritage and culture of Norway and provide quality insurance and financial products to its members.
US Department of Education Scholarship for Council Study Centers in Beijing or Nanjing from the Council on International Educational Exchange and US Department of Education
Available to American or U.S. permanent resident students who apply for study abroad with CIEE Study Center and specifically applicants for the programs in Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, and Taipei. In addition, applicants must be planning a teaching career in a modern foreign language, have completed 2 years of college-level Mandarin Chinese language training and demonstrate high merit and financial need. Awards vary in amount and are applied directly to the applicant's program fee. Past scholarship awards have been in the amounts of $500 - $4000.
Application Deadline: Summer, Fall, and Academic Year Programs is April 15; Spring Programs is November 15.
FinAid: The Smart Student Guide to Financial Aid
Scholarships and fellowships are reserved for students with special qualifications, such as academic, athletic or artistic talent. Awards are also available for students who are interested in particular fields of study, who are members of underrepresented groups, who live in certain areas of the country or who demonstrate financial need.
