Course Tutors
WaLC course tutors facilitate small-group review sessions for specific courses, assist students with developing effective study and self-management skills, and act as a liaison between students and faculty. Tutors have an opportunity to earn Tutor Certification through the College Reading and Learning Association, to reinforce their own understanding of course material, to build relationships with course instructors, to develop strategies for effective studying, and to gain valuable professional work experience.- Visit our Tutor Responsibilities and Qualifications page for a complete job description and a link to our employment application

- Starting pay: $8.00/hour, with increases up to $9.00 for tutors who earn Tutor Certification
- Application deadline: Hiring for tutoring positions is contingent on program funding and faculty support, but hiring is ongoing, and applications are accepted year round.
Writing Tutors
Writing Tutors are graduate assistants who collaborate with students from all classes and majors at every stage of the writing process, from brainstorming and prewriting to drafting and revising. An English concentration is not required to become a tutor, but a willingness to learn is. Writing Fellows
Writing Fellows address undergraduate writing needs by providing support in classes where faculty members have requested extra help for their students. Each Fellow is assigned to one course and works closely with 10 to 15 students on writing assignments in the class. Fellows read drafts of each paper, write thorough endnotes, and conference with each student to discuss revision strategies. Fellows also meet with the instructor occasionally to discuss assignments and requirements.

Academic Skills Consultants (ASC)
Academic Skills Consultants (ASCs) are successful students who are trained to deliver interactive learning skills workshops and one-on-one consultations to students at Western. Using guided discussions and hands-on activities, ASCs introduce students to effective strategies for time management, note taking, reading, studying, and test taking. In addition, ASCs represent the WaLC and the University at Orientation sessions and Open Houses. Students chosen to work as ASCs have an opportunity to improve their public speaking and interpersonal communication skills while reinforcing their own successful learning strategies.

Office Assistants
Office Assistant positions are available only to students who have a Work Study allocation through the Financial Aid Office. Office assistants play an integral role in the efficient functioning of the WaLC.
