To help Western Teaching Fellows further with their education, our Teaching Fellows Program holds weekly seminars. These seminars, which Fellows sign up for as class credit, are designed to address issues beyond the scope of the regular teacher education curriculum. Some recent topics in seminar classes have been school violence, technology, inclusion, site-based management, child abuse, and cultural diversity. Learn more about seminar topics.
Freshman/Sophomore Retreat
When first-year Teaching Fellows arrive on Western's campus, they are welcomed to a retreat with Sophomore Fellows. This retreat allows freshmen to establish connections with other Fellows in the program, build relationships with other members of their class, and get to know the University and the campus. Activities range from cookouts to ropes courses, and the only requirement is fun!

Speaker Series
One of the benefits of being a Teaching Fellow at Western is our Speaker Series. Each year there are several speaker events on campus for Fellows to attend. Western has hosted Teachers of the Year, Chair of the North Carolina State Board of Education, Senator John Snow, Senator Howard Lee, and other faculty speakers. Each speaker represents a tremendous opportunity for enrichment.

Social Life
Contrary to popular myth, there's always something to do in Cullowhee or the surrounding area. The Leadership Committee tries to plan several fun events each year, some of which include trips to Dixie Stampede, cookouts, dinners, and more. Again, the only requirement is fun!

Leadership Committee
The Leadership Committee is an essential component to our Teaching Fellows Program. Made up of volunteers, the committee plans social events for all Fellows, helps in the community by sponsoring charity functions, and assists in recruitment for the University, as well as other services. Serving on this committee not only adds to each participant's college experience, but also helps to support the University and the College of Education.
