About David Martin:

Mr. Martin began his construction career working in the summers during his high school days as a masonry laborer for his brother. After some good humor teasing from his co-workers, he recalls telling them that one day he would be running the entire project so they better be nice. Following high school in 1987, Mr. Martin enrolled in the Construction Management Program at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College and then on to the University of Cincinnati where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Construction Management and gained invaluable experience academically and professionally through their respective cooperative education programs.

Following graduation in 1992, Mr. Martin began working as a project engineer for a Cincinnati-based commercial contractor working as an estimator and project scheduler and eventually moved into the field as an assistant superintendent on several concrete parking garage and tenant fit-out projects.  In April 1995, Mr. Martin began working as a Quality Control/Safety Engineer at the US Army Defense Construction and Supply Center in Columbus Ohio providing both on-site management and coordination as well as ensuring that quality standards were met.

In December 1997, Mr. Martin decided he wanted to pursue a career in teaching at Ivy Tech State College in Richmond, Indiana where he was hired as the Program Chair for Construction Technology. While in Ivy Tech’s employ, Mr. Martin earned his Master of Arts in Management from Regent University completely on-line. Understanding that succeeding in higher education requires obtaining a doctorate, in the fall of 2001, Mr. Martin landed in Blacksburg, Virginia where he enrolled into the graduate program at Virginia Tech to pursue a Ph.D. in Construction Engineering and Management. By this time, Mr. Martin had been married for five years to his partner in life, Jennifer with his son Zachariah (2) and Joshua on the way, Mr. Martin discovered it to be necessary to maintain full-time employment. He was subsequently hired by an ENR Top 100 Construction Management for Fee firm, McDonough Bolyard Peck Construction Engineering and Management (MBP). While at MBP, Mr. Martin worked on several projects providing expert analysis on construction claims assessing cause and effect of schedule delays, cost overruns, and code violations. Additionally, Mr. Martin acted as the on-site construction manager on a $32.5 million museum/hotel/conference complex and a $20 million laboratory/classroom building on the campus of Virginia Tech.

With his Master of Science in Civil Engineering from Virginia Tech and now little Wesley his 3rd son, Mr. Martin accepted a position as Assistant Professor of Construction Management at Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) in the fall of 2005. During his time at EKU, Mr. Martin instructed students in areas such cost estimating and bidding, construction project control methods, construction materials and methods, and project management and administration. During this time the construction program grew from 90 students to 150 accounting for the program’s largest growth in the program’s 30 year history. In addition, Mr. Martin aided in acquiring two new affiliations with the Kentucky Homebuilders Association and the Kentuckiana Chapter of the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC). He continues to instruct students in construction control methods and project management procedures as well as construction safety and construction organizational behavior issues. Mr. Martin is still working on his doctorate and frequently provides construction consulting and instructional services to contractors and public entities. Mr. Martin was nominated and listed in the 2007 edition of Who’s Who in America’s Educators and is certified by the Association for the Advancement of Cost Engineering as a Planning and Scheduling Professional.
