Doug Kinard has a Bachelor of Science in Design, a Master of Architecture, and over 25 years experience in commercial and institutional design and construction. He is Licensed as an Architect in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. He is NCARB certified, LEED Accredited and a member of the Project Management Institute
After obtaining his undergraduate degree at Clemson University he interned for two years in Charleston, SC and joined the military where he spent the next five years in various leadership capacities. He was accepted into the Master’s program in Clemson’s College of Architecture upon leaving military service. His master’s thesis explored the intricacies of chaos theory as it relates to design. While working on his master’s, he interned at Destin Architectural Group in Destin, Florida and later accepted a position there. He returned to South Carolina after leaving Florida in 1993 and began his career as a registered architect. He worked as an architect, project architect and architectural project manager on a variety of commercial, institutional and educational buildings.
In 1998 he refocused his career on project management when he accepted a position a a senior project manager at Clemson University. As the owner’s sole representative, he worked very closely with architects, engineers and contractors as well as with the user groups who would eventually occupy the building. During this time he began to teach in an adjunct capacity with Department of Construction Science and Management. He also held several positions with the Greenville, Sc chapter of the AIA and the Greenville, Chapter of PMI.
Having accepted a position at Western Carolina, he intends to focus the remainder of his career on academics. He will begin the pursuit of a Doctorate in August of 2008.
