The HPER department wants students to establish healthy lifetime habits that will sustain them in whatever community they find themselves. We offer HEAL (Health) 111: “Stress Management for Health and Wellness” and HEAL 123: “Health and Wellness” to help you achieve these goals.
These two Liberal Studies courses are designed to help you understand your health and the role of personal responsibility in maintaining it. Both courses help you discover resources available in Western's community to support your efforts to achieve and maintain a level of wellness and fitness for now and for a lifetime.
In HEAL 123 and HEAL 111, you will complete an entire personal wellness assessment so you can compare your score with individuals of similar age and gender. We then customize your classroom experience so you can learn how to improve each component of the assessment. All classes contain an activity component to help guide students towards a healthy lifestyle.
Both courses also strive to help you learn about stress, so you can recognize the “stressors” in your life, measure them, and actively learn to manage them. All students complete a Behavior Change Project that allows each student to individualy set goals for themselves and reflect upon their progress throughout the semester.
For your convenience, we offer many sections of these courses in the fall and spring semesters as well as in summer school. We also offer hybrid and online options.
