During the summer months, BCC is very busy providing outdoor programs for the many groups here on campus. We work primarily with high-school age groups here for various summer camp programs, but also work with incoming college students, and older adults here for conferences. Many summer employees also take summer classes during the regular summer sessions. If you can, enrole in classes that take place before noon.
As a summer employee, you will be trained in whitewater raft guiding. Every employee will spend aprox. half your work time guiding rafts on the Nantahala River and the Tuckaseigee River. You will also be trained in leading at least one other activity such as climbing wall, caving, canoeing, indoor climbing spire, or whitewater kayaking. The other half of your work time will be primarily in this second activity.
Summer staff training starts just after exams, May 11th, and will continue through May. Summer employment continues till the middle of August.
Work During the Academic Year
All academic year postitions at BCC are currently full. Summer 2010 positons are open - see above. Summer employees have first choice to work here during the rest of the year.
There are essentially three job functions at Base Camp:
- All Employees spend time working at the Base Camp store front on campus. In this capacity, you will help people with gear rentals, local information, and signing them up for trips. You will also help with gear cleaning, repair, and inventory.
- Employees also have the opportunity to work the various trips that Base Camp offers. You will plan and design the trip, advertise and market the trip, run and instruct the trip, and complete paperwork and clean up after the trip. Some trips are as short as a few hours, some are as long as 10 days.
Base Camp Cullowhee is permitted to operate on National Forest Service Land.
