Q: Where do I go for the Rafting Trip?
A: When you arrive on campus, sign in at Scott Hall between 11am-noon. At Scott Hall, look for the Base Camp Cullowhee booth, we'll take care of you from there.
Q: When do I arrive for the Backpacking/Rock Climbing Trip?
A: Participants who choose sign up for the First Ascent Backpacking/Rock Climbing Trip can move into your residence hall room on the first day of your trip (August 7 or 15). Typically most students arrive with everything and move into the room, other students come with just what they need for the trip and family comes the following weekend (Saturday, August 22nd ) with the rest of the student's belongings.
Q: Where do we stay when we are on campus?
A: You'll be staying in your residence hall room that was assigned to you for the year.
Q: What if I have never been rafting, camping, backpacking/climbing before?
A: Don't worry, many of the participants have never been done any of these outdoor adventures before and students discover that they really enjoy camping as a group. On the trip, your leaders will teach you all the basic skills you will need to be comfortable.
Q: What kind of shape do I need to be in?
A: You should be in good physical shape for this First Ascent program. We will be traveling 2-5 miles a day with 45lb backpacks in mountainous terrain. Contact Base Camp if you have questions about the physical requirements of the program.
Q: Do I need any special equipment for the Backpacing Trip?
A: See Participant Packing List. You'll need to provide your own clothing. Base Camp Cullowhee can provide the rest. If there is anything you need from the list that you do not have please feel free to e-mail us.
