SoTL at Western is a university-wide initiative focusing upon the mission and aspirations of the university.  Western Carolina’s Mission Statement says, “Western Carolina University creates engaged learning opportunities that incorporate teaching, research and service through residential, distance education and international experiences.  The university focuses its academic programs, educational outreach, research and creative activities, and cultural opportunities to improve individual lives and enhance economic and community development in the region, state and nation.”

The purpose of SoTL at Western is to improve student learning, renew faculty teaching and professional development, deepen collegiality among all sectors of the university community, and feature WCU’s mission as the epitome of academic life at the university, thereby enhancing WCU’s reputation for excellence in educational enthusiasm, experience, and outcomes.
