Biography:

Ms. Culpepper has taught in the History Department since 1999.  She earned a BA and MA in American History at Western Carolina University and completed the PhD program in American History at The University of Tennessee, achieving ABD (doctoral candidate) status under the direction of Professor Stephen V. Ash.  Her primary teaching and research interests involve the Colonial and Revolutionary eras in American history, and the 19th century South.  In each of her courses Ms. Culpepper emphasizes the significance of immigration and settlement patterns in the early periods, the multi-racial nature of American society as it developed, and the role of ideas in our social, economic, and political history.  She has published articles on the Cherokee Indians in western North Carolina and African Americans in post-Civil War Henderson County, NC.  She authored the award-winning Under Their Own Vine and Fig Tree: The History of Mud Creek Missionary Baptist Church, East Flat Rock, Henderson County, North Carolina, 1867-2002 (2002).  Ms. Culpepper’s secondary field is World History, where at UT she was directed by Professor Palmira Brummett.  Her courses emphasize the nature of Islamic culture and civilization before the age of European expansion, as well as the significance of cross-cultural exchanges and commercial interactions between diverse peoples of the eastern Mediterranean basin and the greater Indian Ocean world to around 1500 CE.
