Biography:
Dr. Szabo received her Ph.D. in Medieval Studies from Cornell University. Her research interests center on the medieval North Atlantic, the history of whaling, and environmental history. Her research has been supported by Cornell University, the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland and of London, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. She has several research projects underway on Viking Age whaling, including a major project on cetacean osteoarchaeology. She recently published Monstrous Fishes and the Mead-Dark Sea: Whaling in the Medieval North Atlantic (Brill, 2008). She also is skilled in the art of trebuchet construction.
