Biography:
Dr. Young received his Ph.D .from the University of California, San Diego. He specializes in the cultural and political history of modern Europe, and his current research focuses on the role of music in the development of Spanish nationalism. He has served as a Fulbright Scholar to Spain, and his research has been supported by the Program for Cultural Cooperation between the Spanish Ministry of Culture and United States Universities. He is currently at work revising his dissertation, “Zarzuela; or Lyric Theatre as Consumer Nationalism in Spain, 1874-1930,” for publication. His article “Theatrical Reform and the Emergence of Mass Culture in Spain” will appear in the November 2008 special issue of Sport in Society dedicated to sports and popular culture in Spain.
