Student Health Insurance

New insurance requirements for ALL Catamount Students

Western Carolina University, in accordance with the UNC School System, requires students to have health insurance coverage while enrolled at WCU.  Students can obtain insurance coverage to meet the requirement through the university sponsored health plan administered by Pearce & Pearce, Inc. through the Medcost network. WCU has been working closely with the entire UNC School System to provide a comprehensive yet affordable student health plan.  The current premium is $298 per semester.  If a student is covered under another major medical plan, that student can opt to waive out of the university supported plan.

Requirements for mandatory health insurance

Degree seeking undergraduate or graduate student enrolled in 12 or 9 credit hours or more per semester.

**Please note that students taking less than 6 hours and distance learning students are not eligible for student health insurance.

Each student is required to take action regarding his/her insurance coverage.  Each student that does not elect to waive the mandatory plan will be automatically enrolled and the premium charge will be added to tuition and fees. To ensure accuracy related to enrolled versus waived students WCU requires you to take action now.
