RN to BSN Program Eight-Semester Plan

Semesters 1 through 6 may be taken at a NC Community College (NCCC) and involve completing

  1. The Associate of Applied Science in Nursing, and
  2. Other work to meet the NCCC 44-hour General Education Core (or the Associate of Art, or the Associate of Science degrees), and
  3. The courses required for admission to the RN to BSN track:
    • Human Anatomy & Physiology (BIO 165/166 or BIO 168/169)
    • Microbiology (BIO 175 or BIO 176) (or BIO 275 if that is all that is available)
    • One college-transfer chemistry with a lab (CHM 130/130A, CHM 131/131A, CHM 132, CHM 135, CHM 151, or CHM 152)
    • General Psychology (PSY 150), and
  4. Electives to bring total transferable hours to 60, not including nursing courses (NUR preffix).

Students should consult as early as possible with the Director of the NCCC nursing program and the NCCC Counselor who advises nursing majors to determine eligibility for and initiate application to the nursing program.  If admission to the nursing course sequence (item 1) is delayed, the student should pursue the courses for the Gen Ed Core (item 2).  Many of the RN to BSN requirements (item 3) will be incorporated into these studies.  If admission to the nursing course sequence (item 1) is immediate, the student should plan an additional year of full-time study to complete items 2, 3, and 4.

Semesters 7 and 8 involve full-time study in 32 hours of upper-division courses offered by WCU.  The online courses involve class meetings in Asheville at the start and end of each term.  The shortest possible plan is laid out below and may start either in the fall or in the spring:
