The Footworks Percussive Dance Ensemble will make an appearance at Western Carolina University at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 3, at the Fine and Performing Arts Center as the final event in the 2007-08 Galaxy of Stars/Something for Everyone Series.
Featuring clogging from Southern Appalachia; stepdances from Ireland, England and Canada; and “hamboning,” “hoofin’” and early jazz tap of the American South, the Footworks troupe will perform its signature work, “Incredible Feets,” under the artistic direction of Eileen Carson and musical direction of Mark Schatz. The ensemble consists of six dancers and three musicians, who play fiddle, banjo, bass, mandolin and guitar.
Since 1979, Footworks has performed at colleges and universities throughout the United States as well as in venues such as the Kennedy Center, the Lincoln Center and the Glasgow Concert Hall. The troupe also has appeared as guest artists in the London production of “Riverdance.”
In addition to its public presentation, Footworks will perform a one-hour school-matinee version at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 2, as part of Learning Live!, a series designed to introduce regional students of all ages to the performing arts and complement the classroom curriculum.
Tickets for the evening event cost $25. Senior citizens’ and faculty tickets cost $20, and student tickets cost $15. Tickets can be purchased online at http://wcufapac.ticketsxchange.com/index.asp.
