M.A.T. in Special Education

The M.A.T. program is for those persons who do not have an “A” level license in special education. Qualified persons with a B.A or B.S. degree may earn a teaching license and graduate degree simultaneously. The program consists of a professional core, pedagogy courses, and a concentration in one of the following areas: behavioral disorders, learning and intellectual disabilities, or severe/profound disabilities.

Admission Criteria:

• Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution
• 3.0 average on last half of undergraduate program or 2.85 overall GPA
• Satisfactory score on the GRE
• Three letters of recommendation
• Acceptance into Western’s Graduate School

Program: 36-39 semester hours of graduate study plus 0-15 semester hours of undergraduate prerequisite study:

• 15 semester hours professional core
• 12-18 hours teaching methods and clinical experiences
• 9 semester hours of special education concentration
• Exit portfolio
• State-required licensure examinations
