The event will begin on the A.K. Hinds University Center lawn with a drum circle that will lead into the march. Male participants will be invited to paint their hands for handprints on a banner titled “These Hands Are Not for Hurting.” After the march, there will be a candlelight vigil, cookout and music on the University Center lawn.
The unifying theme throughout the event is “Strong When We Are Alone. Fearless When We Are Together.” The event maintains that all human beings have the right to be free from violence, the right to be heard and the right to reclaim those rights if they are violated, said Tanisha L. Jenkins, WCU director of multicultural affairs and interim director of the Women’s Center.
“This is a place to take a stand, a place to break the silence,” Jenkins said. The university, the Women’s Center and community members are taking a stand against violence toward women and are helping put an end to sexual violence, she said.
