Tips From Provost Kyle Carter for File Preparation.
Tips From Provost Kyle Carter for File Preparation.
- Remember you are preparing materials for multiple reviewers whose time is valuable. Present your best case but do so succinctly. You need to be considerate of their time.
- Dossiers should not be too long.
- They should be well organized.
- You should summarize multiple years of information (e.g. course evaluations) in tables.
- Sloppy dossiers imply that you do not care much about yourself or the reviewer - that you are not taking the process seriously.
- Samples of information to illustrate your work are preferred to everything you have ever done. Few will look at everything so they may miss your best work.
- Prepare the dossier to leave little doubt that you are qualified. Don't make the reader hunt for information to support your candidacy. A reader will probably quit looking after a short while.
- Follow the format and procedural guidelines as stated in the provost's memo that comes out annually.
- If you are in a unique discipline as compared to the rest of the university- such as art or construction management- that emphasizes different attributes for scholarship, you might explain what those attributes are in your five page statement. Granted, the departmental TPR document should do this, too, but often they are written in jargon that makes perfect sense to departmental faculty but may be missed by those outside the discipline. Have someone from a different discipline review your statement to assure you have communicated what is important.
