WCU, Society for Quality to present seminar April 19
Western Carolina University and the Western North Carolina Chapter of the American Society for Quality will present a seminar in value stream mapping from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 19, in Room 104 of WCU’s Belk Building.

Originating at Toyota Motor Corporation, value stream mapping is a lean manufacturing tool that facilitates the elimination of waste, focusing on either a product or a process. Participants will learn the fundamentals of value stream mapping and put those basics into practice with hands-on activities.

“The effective use of this tool can aid significantly in improving production or information flow through the identification of non-value-added tasks,” said Wes Stone, assistant professor of engineering technology at WCU and seminar leader.

“Value stream mapping is used in a number of industries, from software development to financial products to traditional manufacturing. It can reduce the amount of time it takes to get the product to the customer,” said Stone.

Stone holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Texas at Austin and a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Penn State, where he investigated noise and vibration in roller chain drives, and earned a doctoral degree from Georgia Tech, where his research focused on subsurface damage during the grinding of titanium aluminide.

Stone has worked for General Electric’s Manufacturing Management Program in Vermont and Ohio, as well as that company’s gas turbine plant in Greenville, SC, where he worked in final assembly and buckets machining shops in the roles of process flow engineer, cell engineer, and GE-certified Black Belt.

Stone’s concentrations at WCU are in manufacturing, Six Sigma quality, metrology, and laser micro-machining.
Participants in the seminar also will tour the facilities in WCU’s engineering and technology department, including the Rapid Prototyping Center, Laser Machining Lab, CNC Machining Lab, Automation Lab, Polymers Lab and Solid Modeling Lab.

Registration is $149 for ASQ Members and $249 for non-members.
