Receiving Service-Learning Partnership Awards will be the Jackson County Department of Social Services; Jackson County Green Energy Park; Emily Elders, the town of Dillsboro’s assistant administrator; and Timara McCollum, executive director of Community Table. They will be honored at the fourth annual WCU service-learning awards banquet at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 24, in the Ramsey Regional Activity Center.
The Jackson County Department of Social Services will be recognized for facilitating service-learning projects by students primarily in the business computer information systems and economics department. William Richmond, WCU associate professor of computer information systems, said the agency has helped students understand how organizations use technology to deliver services.
The Jackson County Green Energy Park was the service site for communication students who produced information designed to brand the park and create public awareness of its purpose and activities. Debra Connelly, WCU assistant professor of communication, praised the organization for giving students opportunities to be creative and professional.
Dillsboro’s Elders collaborated with WCU students to design, organize and conduct the first Appalachian Grower’s Fair in support of the Appalachian Women’s Museum. For her part, the Community Table’s McCollum assisted with the coordination of community service through which students worked on a grant-writing project and assisted in providing nutritional meals for community members.
In addition, awards in the form of plaques, pins and certificates will be presented to students and faculty members for their contributions and achievements in volunteer and course-based community service. Five winners of the Jacob Spencer Medford Scholarship also will be announced.
Community leader Norman West, a 19-year volunteer with the American Cancer Society and board member for several charitable organizations, will deliver the keynote address, and Brenda Oliver, mayor of Sylva, will bring greetings from the municipality.
