Western Carolina University’s department of stage and screen will present its spring dance showcase at 7:30 p.m. April 25 and 26 in the Fine and Performing Arts Center.
The showcase is titled “A Moveable Feast: An Evening of Dance Works.” It will feature the choreography of Western Carolina’s dance faculty, graduate students and alumni, with pieces varying from classical ballet to modern and musical theater styles.
The program will feature a variety of dance genres and music. Instructor Amy Jacques will restage the final section of the classical ballet “La Bayedere” and unveil a new piece to the original music of Asheville composer Richard Shulman. Instructor Amy Dowling will perform a new modern piece to the music of Philip Glass. Director of dance Holly Clark will showcase the musical theater students from Western in a medley of Broadway pieces.
On Friday night, Shulman’s piece will be played by WCU faculty Bradley Martin on piano, accompanied by Shannon Thompson on clarinet. Saturday, Shulman will give a pre-show talk at 6:45 p.m. on composing music for dance. He will then perform live for the evening performance, playing piano, with Thompson accompanying him on the clarinet.
