These sessions include some informal evaluation to determine the existing strategies each child already uses and what new strategies to introduce. Much time is spent acquainting the child with a wide variety of good literature as well as exciting new content area books. The reading materials will focus on the areas of the child's interests.
The program also integrates the new competency goals from the North Carolina Standard Course of Study in Communication Skills, particularly Goal #1 which focuses on learners becoming aware of their own thinking processes including the reading process and Goal #4 which emphasizes using language for personal response and reflection.
Tuition fees are $50.00 per child. A limited number of scholarships are awarded for each program and flexible payment plans are available.
The program is held during the fall and spring academic semesters. The number of placements in the group program is dependent upon the number of students enrolled in EDRD 474/573.
