Travis Mullin, Freshman, Major: Psychology and English

After College: I want to go to graduate school, hopefully directly into a doctoral program for psychology. I hope to work for the FBI in the Behavioral Analysis Unit trying to catch serial killers or to be a clinician and help people who need it. I would also like to write fiction novels, probably psychological thrillers like Thomas Harris’ Hannibal series.

Why I came to WCU: The main reason that I came to WCU is because I came here for an open house and fell in love with the campus and the faculty that I met here. I’m the kind of person that learns better when I have a friendly relationship with my instructor and know that I can get help from them if I need it. I was here for an open house and I went to a departmental meeting where the person giving the speech was naming all of the people in the slides, that is why I came here. The education that I am receiving here is superb and I know that because the people that are teaching me care about what they are teaching and care about me.

Dear Family Association Members,

I would like to begin this letter by simply saying thank you.  You cannot imagine what the honor of receiving this scholarship means to me.  Without the help of the Family Association and Shawna Young I would not be able to attend this wonderful school next year.  This scholarship was a wonderful glimmer of light on a dark horizon in my life where everything seemed to be getting worse and I was quickly losing sight of my dreams.  This scholarship was the turning point of this period of my life, after receiving news of this great honor I found out that I have been accepted as an RA for the next term as well as being honored with the Freshman Mathematics Award.

The financial support of the Family Association means a continued education for me, and nothing could be more important.  The support that the Family Association provides is immeasurable in value and I cannot thank you enough for the support and honor that you have bestowed upon me and the community.  So, again, thank you for the invaluable services that you provide.

Sincerely,

Travis Mullen

Nathan Wetmore, Junior, Major: Enginering Technology

During my almost 3 years a Western I have been involved with the Pride of the Mountains Marching Band, the Society of Automotive Engineers, the Tau Alpha Pi engineering honors society, and the Honors College.  In my spare time (what little I have) I enjoy watching T.V., playing video games, making things, and other usual college student activities.  In the spring time, however, I pack up a sleeping bag and an overnight bag and head for Atlanta on the weekends so that I can participate in a winter drum line called Odyssey Percussion Theatre.  It is a reflection of how much music affects my life, and it is one of my favorite things to do.

Next year will be my last one here at Western, and I cannot imagine how much I will miss this place and all of the people in it.

To the Members of the Family Association,

My name is Nathan Wetmore and I was recently selected to receive the Family Association Scholarship.  I owe sincere thanks to all members of the Family Association for their efforts towards providing such a wonderful scholarship for students.  After almost 3 years in college, I can definitely say that my family has been a driving force in my education.  Through my Mother’s constant encouragement and my Father’s ever-present influence, I feel that I am well on my way towards being successful in the workplace.

I feel that what the family association does for Western is very important, and I encourage you to keep in close contact with your student.  While you may be far away (my parents live 300 miles from Cullowhee!), you can still be very influential in your child’s future.

I thank you once again, and I hope to see you on family weekend in October!

Thank you,

Nathan Wetmore
