"Walking Our World" celebration to be held on WCU campus April 5
Community Health Link of Jackson County and Western Carolina University’s Center for Service Learning will co-sponsor a “Walking Our World” celebration Saturday, April 5, on the WCU campus in Cullowhee.

WOW involves collaboration with social studies classes in six Jackson County schools, where teachers select a destination for a particular grade level based on the curriculum. The students, teachers and parents help the class reach the destination by walking throughout the community and tracking their miles on a classroom chart.

Participating schools are Blue Ridge, Cullowhee Valley, Fairview, the School of Alternatives, Scotts Creek and Smokey Mountain Elementary.

“The program takes students on an academic walking adventure,” said Mandy Harrison, the program coordinator at Community Health Link. “Each child is encouraged to walk two miles per week and can count parent miles walked together to reach the destination selected for the class. Students can also record miles for participating in sports, dancing, cheerleading or any other activity that gets them outside and moving.”

The three-hour celebration, scheduled to kick off at 10 a.m., will take place on WCU’s marching band practice field, located along Memorial Drive. Students from the six schools are expected to wear their WOW T-shirts to the event, which will feature games and fun activities such as relay and sack races, an obstacle course and a scavenger hunt. Some of the activities will be geared to physically challenged students. For each activity completed, the participating students will receive a stamp in their “passports” (provided at registration), and each stamp will add five miles to the student’s walking total.

“We are thrilled that the WOW program has been received so favorably by the students of Jackson County. This event is a celebration of the students’ achievements throughout the year and we are delighted to have the Center for Service Learning at WCU working with us to make the event a reality,” Harrison said.

Anyone interested in volunteering for the event should contact Charli Lehman, WCU Center for Service Learning program coordinator, at clehman@email.wcu.edu or (828) 227-7184.
