Sato, a renowned public artist based in Seattle, will talk about her career during her presentation in Room 130 of the FAPAC. Public art is any art that has been planned and executed with the intention of being sited in a public space. Sato’s extensive background includes design work for the Dallas Convention Center expansion and the Portland, Ore., City Hall renovation, along with transit projects in Portland, Seattle and Salt Lake City.
She has had more than 15 solo exhibitions of her work across the United States and participated in more than 30 group exhibitions worldwide over the past 20 years. Sato has received numerous awards for her work, including three National Endowment for the Arts fellowship awards, the Artists Trust Fellowship for media artists, a Washington State Arts Commission award for her video-related works of art and, most recently, an honor award from the National Terrazzo Association and the International Masonry Institute for her terrazzo floors.
She also has been an artist-in-residence at universities and art schools nationwide, and has held teaching positions at Cornish College for the Arts, the University of Michigan and Western Washington University.
Sato will host a question-and-answer period and also will conduct critiques with graduate students in WCU’s master’s degree program in fine arts.
Her visit is sponsored by WCU’s School of Art and Design.
