About 85 students will present projects on topics such as “Cyberbullying: What School Counselors Should Know,” “School-Based Group Counseling for Children and Pre-Adolescents with ADHD,” “Optimizing Rapid Prototyping Quality Through Controllable Variables,” “The Clyde A. Erwin High School Mascot Controversy,” “Are Older Adults with Low Bone Mineral Density at Risk for Falling?” and “Does Local Spending Help Education?”
“For many of our graduate students, this is their first opportunity to share their research findings and creative works with the academic community,” said Scott Higgins, dean of WCU’s Graduate School and Research. “The critical thinking skills that they learn as part of the research process will serve them well in becoming consumers of information and better citizens of the world.”
Participating students and their faculty sponsors will be honored at a reception beginning at 5 p.m. on March 27 in the University Center Grandroom. A “best paper” award and six other awards will be given to student presenters, and the Graduate Student Teaching and Highlands Biodiversity Scholar awards also will be presented.
The research papers that will be presented during the symposium were reviewed for “rigor of scholarship” by the Graduate School, Higgins said. Last month, a workshop was held for graduate students to provide information about presenting their work at professional conferences. The workshop was sponsored by the Graduate School and the Graduate Student Association.
