Western Carolina University students win awards and accolades on state, regional and national levels. Recent honors include:

Environmental health students to present research at conference (2009)
Six WCU students majoring in environmental health have been selected to present their research at the regional American Society of Safety Engineers professional development conference in Myrtle Beach in late September.

Prestigious journal accepts article by WCU graduate student in English (2009)
An article by Jennifer Doyle-Corn, a graduate student in the English literature program, has been accepted for publication in the 2009-10 issue of the Sigma Tau Delta Review, a journal of the prestigious international English honor society Sigma Tau Delta.

Student wins honorable mention in international sculpture competition (2009)
WCU graduate student Tracy Bochnak Kirchmann recently received an honorable mention in the 2009 Student Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture competition from the International Sculpture Center.

Students win 'Best Film' at 48 Hour Film Project (2009)
A group of Western Carolina University filmmakers and actors won five awards including Best Film and Best Directing at the Asheville 48 Hour Film Project.

Engineering students accepted to prestigious graduate program (2009)
Two recent graduates of Western Carolina University, Robert Brown and Sam Venable, have been accepted into one of only seven electro-optics programs in the United States at the University of Dayton in Ohio.

Alumnus to return on Madison fellowship (2009)

Western Carolina University junior music education major Andrew Blair recently was accepted to a prestigious percussion class to be held in New York later this spring under the direction of the world’s foremost marimba virtuoso.

WCU junior Kerri Elizabeth Bernhardt has been named the Western Region Outstanding Mathematics Education Student for 2008 by the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

Morgan Snyder, a sophomore majoring in elementary education at Western Carolina University, was recently awarded multiple scholarships from the New York Life Insurance Company and the Life and Health Insurance Foundation for Education.

Student team takes first place in state nurse anesthesia quiz bowl (2008)
A team of students from the master’s degree program in nurse anesthesia at Western Carolina University recently took first place in the 2008 North Carolina State Anesthesia College Bowl, beating teams from five other N.C. schools for the title.

Graduate student's article to be published in Walt Whitman Quarterly Review (2008)
Western Carolina University graduate student Karen Dodson was just completing an ordinary assignment for an English class last spring when she transcribed and edited several Civil War-era letters, but her work soon will be published in a prestigious journal that focuses on the life and work of American literary icon Walt Whitman.

Graduate student one of 22 in nation chosen to receive nursing scholarship (2008)

Carey Burda, a senior majoring in natural resource conservation and management, presented information about her research at the National Association of American Geographer’s meeting in Boston.

Senior wins state award for political science paper (2008)
Dave Young, a senior majoring in philosophy, won the North Carolina Political Science Association’s award  for best domestic politics and policy paper for his entry “Inevitable City, Inexorable Storm: How the Failure of Communication, Courage and Common Sense Doomed New Orleans.”

Student receives athletic trainers' scholarship (2008)
Colin Covelli, a senior from Asheville, received one of 30 undergraduate scholarships from the National Athletic Trainers’ Association.

English graduate student wins international honor society scholarship (2008)
Jennifer Veilleux, an English graduate student, recently received a scholarship from an international English honor society.

Student broadcaster wins national radio award (2008)
A graduate student won first place in a national competition for an interview series he conducted with classic rock legends.

Students earn high ranking for National Conference on Undergraduate Research (2008)
For the third year in a row, WCU students rank among the nation’s leaders in the number of their research projects that have been accepted for presentation at the country’s most-prestigious undergraduate research conference.

Web site by student wins regional design award (2008)
A Web site for a WCU organization developed by student Kyle Perkins, a junior from Raleigh majoring in entrepreneurship, won a 2007 Web site design award in a regional Association of College Unions International graphics competition.

Environmental health seniors receive awards from U.S. Public Health Service (2007)
Three WCU students recently were honored for what they achieved during their internships with the U.S. Public Health Service during the summer.

Drumline performs with country music star Keith Urban (2007)
The 33-member drumline from WCU’s Pride of the Mountains Marching Band shared the stage with country music superstar Keith Urban in a concert in Greenville, S.C.

A group of students from WCU recently received a finalist award at the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond’s College Fed Challenge competition.

Students from WCU recently took top honors at the American Democracy Project south regional district’s Third Annual Conference, held at Kennesaw State University in Georgia.

Trumpet ensemble invited to festival in Italy (2007)
The WCU Trumpet Ensemble has been invited to perform at the Orvieto Musica Trumpet Festival in Italy in June 2008.

WCU senior receives N.C. Community Impact Award (2007)
Kathleen Cummins, a WCU senior, is a recipient of the North Carolina Campus Compact 2007 Community Impact Student Award.

Student production sweeps film festival awards
Aaron Putnam and a few of his friends and classmates in WCU’s program in motion picture and television production got together to film “Cosmo of 1932” for the 48 Hour Film Festival, and their work earned nine of the possible 19 awards at the festival, including the Best Film Award and Audience Award.

Nursing student named one of top nurses in the state (2007)
WCU graduate student Jean Sitton was recently selected as one of North Carolina’s top nurses by The Great 100 organization.

Grad student wins state’s speech-hearing award (2007)
Teresa Cruzan, a communication disorders student at WCU and resident of Asheville, is the recipient of the North Carolina Student Achievement Award presented by the North Carolina Speech, Hearing and Language Association.

Students win state business honor society awards (2007)
Students from WCU’s chapter of Phi Beta Lambda honor society in business recently attended a state leadership conference and received awards for their knowledge in business fields.

Faculty member, student receive national awards for radio work (2007)
A WCU faculty member and one of his students received national awards for radio production work at the Broadcast Education Association Convention Festival of Media Arts held in Las Vegas.

Graduate student honored nationally for research (2007)
A national psychological association recently honored WCU clinical psychology graduate student Lauren Drerup for her submitted work to a conference for psychopathology research.

Student awarded “best paper” at state conference (2007)
WCU political science student Chris Douglas was recently awarded the “best undergraduate paper” prize for his essay presented at the North Carolina Political Science Association conference.

Student EMS team takes third place in nationwide competition (2007)
A team of four WCU students recently recorded a third-place finish in a competition that tested the skills of emergency medical service providers from college campuses across the United States and Canada.

Graduate student places first in Charlotte Opera Guild (2007)
WCU graduate student Laurel Fisher won first place in the graduate division auditions of the Charlotte Opera Guild. Elite singers from across North Carolina traveled to participate in the auditions.

WCU students win state awards at residence hall conference (2007)
WCU students earned state awards and recognition recently at the North Carolina Association of Residence Halls annual conference, held on the WCU campus.
