BASIC PROCEDURES

Normally, when SmartMusic first starts, it automatically opens an additional window called "Open SmartMusic Accompaniment." If not, click on "File" in the upper left corner, and then click "Open".

You will see a directory window showing the different instruments. Click on the box next to "Vocal" (near or at the bottom of the list), which should then show the various SmartMusic voice accompaniment disks. Click on the disk which you will use.

You should now see in the right-hand window a listing of all the songs available from that disk. Double-click the song you wish to practice.

You will then be directed to insert the SmartMusic Accompaniment disk, if you have not already done so. The computer will read this disk, and then return to its main window with the song loaded (its title will appear on the screen).

CLICK OFF THE INTELLIGENT ACCOMPANIMENT BUTTON, unless you wish to use this feature. If so, make sure you have plugged the headset microphone into the tan cord (on the wall of the practice rooms, and in front of the computer in Room 375).

The accompaniment will start to play by: 1) clicking on "Play", 2) depressing the foot pedal, or 3) pressing the spacebar key on the computer keyboard.

The accompaniment will PAUSE only if you click on "Pause" (to resume: 1) click on "Pause", 2) depress the foot pedal, or 3) press the spacebar key on the computer keyboard).

While the accompaniment is playing, if you click "Stop", depress the foot pedal, or press the spacebar key on the computer keyboard, then the accompaniment returns to the beginning.

TO CLOSE

Click on "File" in the upper left corner. If you want to use another accompaniment, click "open" and follow the procedures above. If you wish to end your SmartMusic session, click "Exit."

If any settings were changed, the computer will ask if they should be saved. DO NOT SAVE ANY CHANGES!! (this also applies to saving personalized accompaniments - see below). Simply click "No."

SAVING YOUR PERSONALIZED ACCOMPANIMENTS

You may save your accompaniment settings on a floppy disk (or the hard drive), so you won't have to change settings each time you start SmartMusic. However, SmartMusic 6.0 has a "bug" that won't allow it to read directly from a personalized floppy. However, there is a simple solution.

First, make sure all your performance settings are exactly as you want them. NOTE: Changes in tempo are saved ONLY by clicking on "Save" (next to tempo) and making adjustments within (SmartMusic 5.1 users can access this by clicking "Customize" and then "Set Tempo Mark").

Place a floppy disk into the computer.

Then, click on "File" in the upper left corner, and then click "Save Performance As...". You will then see a box labeled "Save Performance." Under "file name", type "a:*****". The asterisks simply mean that you can type whatever name you want. However, you must type "a:" immediately before the desired name. Then click on "Save". Your personalized file has been saved to your floppy disk.

When you wish to use your personal accompaniment, BEFORE STARTING SMARTMUSIC, place the floppy disk in the computer. On the Windows desktop click on "Shortcut to 3½ Floppy (A)". A window will open showing your file(s). Click on the file(s) you choose, and then RIGHT-CLICK. Go down to "Send To." Another window will open, and one of your options will be "Voice Student Files", which you will click on.

Then, when you start SmartMusic, when you see the directory window showing the different instruments, click on "Voice", then "Student Files". Your file should be there; click on it.

NOTE: It is NOT recommended that you use the "Save Custom As" option for saving personalized accompaniments.

FOR HELP WHILE USING SMARTMUSIC
Click on "Help" in upper right corner, then "Online Reference."

WHICH DISKS DO WE HAVE?
Click here for a listing of the SmartMusic disks for voice and their contents.

SIGNING OUT SMARTMUSIC DISKS
The disks are kept in Dr. Maroney's office (Coulter 463), on the table right next to the door. Fill out the sign-out sheet next to the disks (underneath it are listings of the disks' contents). In fairness to all, there is a 24-hour signout period, except for Fridays, in which the disks are due back on Monday. Signouts over extended holiday breaks are allowed only by permission of one of the voice faculty. Failure to return disks in a timely manner will result in a loss of borrowing privileges.

OTHER ACCOMPANIMENTS
In addition to SmartMusic, there are recorded piano accompaniments available for many songs.
