CIVIC ORCHESTRA CONCERT FEATURES WCU FACULTY HORN SOLOIST
The Western Carolina Civic Orchestra will present the first concert of the 2009-2010 season on Saturday, November 21, at 8:00 p.m. in the Recital Hall of the Coulter Building.
The program will feature faculty Horn soloist Travis Bennett, performing Mozart's "Horn Concerto No. 2, K. 417" with the orchestra. Travis Bennett joined the WCU School of Music faculty in 2006, where he teaches French Horn and Music Appreciation, conducts the Horn Choir, and coaches chamber music ensembles. He received his DMA and MM degrees from the University of Alabama, and the BM from Florida
State. In addition to his teaching activities, Dr. Bennett plays more than 50 concerts a year in orchestral, chamber and recital settings. As a member of the Smoky Mountain Brass Quintet, he made his Carnegie Hall debut in June, 2007.
The Civic Orchestra will observe the 200th birthday anniversary of Felix Mendelssohn by performing the third and fourth movements of
Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 5 "Reformation," and "Nocturne" and the "Wedding March" from Mendelssohn's Incidental Music to Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream."
The Civic Orchestra, conducted by William Henigbaum, is made up of student and faculty musicians from WCU, and students and adults from
Jackson, Macon, Haywood, Swain, Cherokee and Buncombe counties. The orchestra is sponsored by the WCU School of Music and is partially
funded by a Grassroots Grant from the North Carolina and the Jackson County Arts Councils.
Admission to the November 21 concert is free.
