Admission
In order to become a music major or minor at Western Carolina University, you must be accepted by both the University and the School of Music.
- Acceptance to the University is based upon academic standards common to all students at the University.
- Acceptance to the School of Music is based upon demonstration of your skills and performance ability in a live audition for members of the music faculty.
How to Apply
You may apply to the University through the Admissions Office.
Undergraduates should fill out the Undergraduate Audition Application form (PDF). Graduate students should complete the Graduate Application (PDF). Download the form, fill it out, and mail it to the address listed on bottom of the form.

Performance Areas
Each of Western’s degree programs include one hour per week of individual instruction plus a weekly one-hour masterclass with the rest of the studio.Whether your performing area is woodwind, brass, percussion, keyboard, or voice, or even commercial and electronic music, our exceptional faculty of recognized and respected professionals will provide you with the training you need to excel. Western’s music program offers a broad selection of performance opportunities through various vocal and instrumental ensembles while utilizing our up-to-date facilities.
Degree Programs
Our undergraduate programs and our graduate programs emphasize both academics and the performance skills you need for success. Choose the course of study that best matches your interest: Bachelor of Arts in Music, Bachelor of Science in Music Education, Bachelor of Music, Master of Music, Master of Arts in Education, or Master of Arts in Teaching.
