Cherokee Language Revitalization Project
Thanks to a generous grant from the Cherokee Preservation Foundation, the EBCI and WCU's office of Cherokee Studies are working together to develop a ten year language revitalization initiative. This initiative takes a three-pronged approach to revitalizing the Cherokee language:
  • Continuing to improve and expand the EBCI Immersion School
  • Utilizing Community Resources, such as the Kituwah Preservation and Education Office and the Fluent1.com program
  • Building WCU's programs to offer a more comprehensive language training curriculum.

The ten year initiative is divided into three phases. The first phase focuses on hiring the necessary faculty and staff for the Immersion program and WCU's language offerings. These positions will be responsible for developing curriculums and coordinating efforts between the EBCI and WCU, with an emphasis on liscensing speakers to teach.. The second phase of the initiative is scheduled to begin in Fall of 2009 with the dedication of facilities specifically for the Immersion program. During this phase curriculums will continue to be enhanced and expanded. The final phase is expected to begin in the fall of 2012, with the additon of three grade levels to the Immersion school.

This summer WCU will be offering two courses focused on language revitalization. The first course is a Master/Apprentice program designed to pair future and current teachers with fluent speakers to improve their speaking and writing abilities. The second course, titled Methods in Language Revitalization, will provide an overview of language revitalization methods and movements among Native Americans and throughout the world, but the focus will be on the application of revitalization methods for the Cherokee language.  Topics such as best practices for immersion schools and classrooms, master/apprentice programs, non-immersion language programs for children and adults, the creation of language materials and the use of technology will be covered.
