Deadlines
MAT Internships: The MAT program requires successful completion of a semester-long internship in a public school in the appropriate licensure grades and subjects. Internship placements are made through the Office of Field Experiences in the College of Education and Allied Professions. The application and resume are due on the last Friday of September (for spring semester internships) and the last Friday of February (for fall semester internships).
Graduation Applications: Applications for graduation must be completed and in the Graduate School by the 15th of September, February, or May to graduate that semester. (It takes some time to get them processed and signed by concentration advisor, education advisor, and one department head.)
Admission to the program requires an undergraduate degree in the major of the concentration or a closely related major. The M.A.T. in Comprehensive Education leads to licensure in:
- Art
- Biology
- Chemistry
- English
- Mathematics
- Music
- Social Sciences
Admission to the M.A.T. Comprehensive Education program in Secondary Education and Special K-12 Subjects requires an interview with Dr. Mary Jean R. Herzog, program coordinator, and communication with your adviser in your concentration. See the Graduate Catalog for admission requirements.
Please plan appropriately as you progress through the MAT program, use this website, the Graduate School, Graduate Catalog and WCU policies and deadlines as a tool to aid you through your time here.
MAT internships require a full-time semester-long commitment. Planning for internship should begin the semester before your final semester, due to the fact that important documentation must be turned in before you can begin your internship. At the same time you apply for your internship, you should also apply for graduation. Failure to meet deadlines may result in an additional semester in the program. Students must be enrolled in at least one credit hour during the semester you graduate, including summer, even if you have finished all of your courses.

The Student Checksheet is a list of required courses and other program requirements. It is useful for program planning and setting your timeline. It is updated periodically, so it is best to check it every so often. See your advisor in your concentration for questions related to content courses.
Internship Information & Documents
The MAT requires a full-time, semester-long internship in the grade level and subject of the concentration. The internship application and resume are due early the semester prior to the internship. All students are advised to get some experience in public schools prior to the internship. This can be done as a volunteer or through an independent practicum. Please check with the Office of Field Experience for documents and more information.
Internship Information Packet
This packet contains an explanation of the responsibilities of interns and information for supervisors and cooperating teachers. It also contains course registration information for the internship semester.
Teacher Observation Forms can be found through the Office of Field Experience - Student Teaching and Internship
