The partial phase of the eclipse begins at 8:43 p.m. and moves to a total eclipse at 10 p.m. The total eclipse phase will end at 10:52 p.m. and the partial eclipse afterward will end at 12:09 a.m.
“As a bonus, the moon will be close to the planet Saturn in the sky during the eclipse. Saturn will be very close to its closest distance to Earth for this year,” Heckert said.
The next total lunar eclipse in North America will not be until 2010, he said.
The viewing is open to the public, but if skies are cloudy or rainy, the event will be canceled. Young children should be accompanied by an adult.
To reach the Jackson County Airport, turn onto Little Savannah Road from N.C. Highway 107. Go approximately 1.5 miles and make a sharp right turn onto Airport Road.
