You will need a student identification card to check books out and to use materials placed on reserve by your professors. You may keep books for three weeks and renew for additional three-week intervals.  Periodicals must be used in the library building

Databases Available On Campus or From Home

In addition to books, periodicals, printed indexes, media materials, and maps, more than 100 databases are available to you from Hunter Library at WCU.  Most databases contain citations to articles and many include the article texts.  Specialized databases help you locate statistics, poems, encyclopedia articles, tax research, college catalogs, government documents, and more.

You can use these databases either on campus or from home.  To connect from home, you will need to identify yourself as a WCU student by entering your WCU ID number. These numbers generally begin with the digits 920. Your number should be provided as part of your orientation information packet. More information about your ID number.

Some WCU-only resources are not accessible from the UNC Asheville campus due to proxy-recognition issues.  However, at UNC Asheville, WCU has two classrooms where WCU-only resources can be accessed.  These are in Karpen Hall 036 and 037 computer labs.  There are also two designated stations in Ramsey Library where WCU-only resources may be used.  If these locations are not available, please go the WCU office, 120 Karpen Hall, for assistance.

Call Hunter Library's Reference Desk (828-227-7465 or toll-free 866-928-5425) or the Circulation Desk (828-227-7485) if you have trouble connecting from off campus.

ABC Express & Interlibrary Loan

ABC (Asheville, Boone, Cullowhee) Express is a document delivery service operated by the libraries of Appalachian State University, UNC Asheville, and Western Carolina University. If you need a book, journal or other library material that is not held in your library, you may be able to obtain it through ABC Express. If one of the other two libraries owns the item, ABC Express can have it for you in one to four days.  Complete instructions for using ABC Express are available online or at the Reference Desk of any of the three libraries.

Interlibrary Loan can help you get those materials that you can't obtain through ABC Express.  Instructions and forms for using interlibrary loan are available online.
