Personal Statement:

I was born in Los Angeles, California, but stayed there only a short time. My father was a salesman and we moved almost every year, so I experienced many schools and the challenge of being the new student. Finally, when I was a high school freshman, my parents settled down in Jacksonville Beach, Florida where I finished my high school years.

After graduating from The Florida State University, I began my teaching career in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. My career in this region of the state extended over 30 years. During this time I served as a middle school teacher, a school-based administrator, and a central office administrator in the Broward County Public Schools (Ft. Lauderdale ). Before I came to Western, I was the executive director of a regional center that provided professional development for school leaders in five school districts.

The focus of my work since 1984 has been professional development. I am interested in how faculty and staff can learn together to improve student learning. The development of a school culture to build this professional learning community takes time, so I am concerned about the continuity of leadership in a school. My recent work has focused on how leadership can be distributed beyond the formal leadership roles in the school so that continuity of leadership does not depend on one person.

I live in Franklin with my husband (a retired middle school principal), a chocolate lab, and an assertive cat. We are fortunate that two of our children and their families moved to Franklin. One son is still living in South Florida and another lives in Nashville, Tennessee.
