Personal Statement:
I came to Western in the summer of 2004 in response to the rare opportunity to meld a personal vision for educational technology development with the missions of the University, my college, my academic department, and our regional constituents. My most recent prior appointment was at the University of Massachusetts Lowell Graduate School of Education, where I served in the masters and doctoral programs in Curriculum and Instruction, and in School Leadership.
My strongest research interest centers on my teaching, especially in online learning environments. Of specific interest is the design of computer networked learning environments that promote student engagement and the social construction of knowledge in shared learning communities. Following recent faculty assignments in Finland and Portugal, the cultural challenges of cross-border learning particularly intrigue me.
Prior to my life as a university professor, I taught high school and middle school English and Social Studies, served as Executive Director of Massachusetts Educational Television, and as a purchasing agent for a large Canadian corporation.
My avocational interests include photography, travel, public affairs (especially mid-20th Century history), and the study of French (with which I continue to need a lot – and I mean a lot – of remediation).
I am married to Faith LeBaron and have two grown children and three grandchildren. My kids and grandkids live in New England. Like me, Faith is a lifelong educator, specializing in the early years. My son, Matthew, works in New York specializing in equity capital investment. My daughter, Jessie, is a painter who teaches at Boston University.
