English Department
At WCU, when you study English, you will be joining one of the most vibrant programs at the university, where our students and faculty engage in the life of the mind and yet are committed to putting ideas into action.

The Department of English offers exciting courses that will help you see the connection between academics and a successful and meaningful life beyond the classroom.

Our students become expert writers and thinkers. They study literature, read great authors, and experiment with creative writing.  But they also learn how to apply their knowledge to real-world settings. Through our coursework in journalism, motion-picture studies, professional writing and teacher education, they explore different ways their skills can lead to fulfilling careers.

By incorporating the latest technology into the classroom, we equip our students to make the most of their experience as students of English, and provide special opportunities to work with hands-on projects.

Our graduate program offers a Master of Arts in English with concentrations in literature or professional writing, a Master of Arts in Teaching, and a Master of Education in English.

Guiding the way is our experienced, dedicated faculty, many of whom have followed this same path and made their mark as successful professionals and award-winning authors.
