A Web site for a Western Carolina University organization developed by student Kyle Perkins, a junior from Raleigh majoring in entrepreneurship, won a 2007 Web site design award in a regional Association of College Unions International graphics competition.
Perkins and co-workers at his company, Waynesville-based Shadow Development Technologies, revamped the Web site for Last Minute Productions, the student-run entertainment and activity planning organization at WCU. The site is located on the Web at http://lmp.wcu.edu/.
At the fall ACUI conference, Perkins accepted the award and gave a presentation titled “Web Sites: Helpful Fact or Hurtful Fiction for your Organization.” Perkins previously presented on the topic at the southeastern regional conference for the National Association of Campus Activities and will present again at the organization’s national conference in St. Louis in February.
“Instead of throwing confusing words and techniques to my audiences, I talk to them on how they can improve their own sites, both for personal and professional use and for their audiences,” said Perkins. “I have come across many sites today for student and professional organizations that have poor navigation, super-flashy designs or are out of date, which can turn people away.”
Perkins said he improves Web sites through simple design, sensible navigation and organization, and creating ways to keep sites up-to-date through his work with Shadow Development Technologies, a company Perkins founded and leads as chief executive officer and Web developer.
On staff with Perkins at Shadow Development Technologies, which is located in Waynesville in the Smoky Mountain Development Corporation business incubator, is Zach Phillips, a junior from Hamptonville majoring in computer science; Keat Cahoon, a graphic artist for Lunar Productions; and consultant Frank Lockwood, director of WCU’s master’s degree program in entrepreneurship.
Perkins is a 2005 graduate of Southeast Raleigh Magnet High School, where he created a content management system as his graduation project.
