Focus the Nation is an unprecedented educational initiative on global warming solutions for America occurring at more than 1,000 universities and colleges in all 50 states on Jan. 31.
“This is really the first national discussion on trying to seek solutions for global climate change, and I’m excited that it’s taking place at the college level with young people who are going to be inheriting this problem and who also will be our next generation of leaders,” said Jane Nichols, assistant professor of interior design and co-coordinator of WCU’s Focus the Nation events.
Kicking off the teach-in will be the Web cast “The 2% Solution” produced by the National Wildlife Federation and aired by the Earth Day Network at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30.
Focus the Nation activities at WCU will take place in A.K. Hinds University Center from noon to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 31. Live music will be performed in the center’s atrium from noon until 2 p.m. Tables with information and demonstrations related to global climate change solutions will be set up in the atrium and multipurpose room from noon until 5 p.m. Issue-related movies will be shown in the theater. Speakers and round-table discussions will take place in the multipurpose room from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. A student debate focused on climate change policies will begin at 6 p.m.
Focus the Nation also invites students, faculty and community participants to vote online starting Monday, Jan. 21, on the Web at http://www.focusthenation.org/ for the global warming solutions that they support. Results will be presented in mid-February.
“We are planning this event on our campus, but it is not just for students,” said Lauren Bishop, campus energy manager and co-coordinator of WCU’s Focus the Nation events. “We invite everyone in our community to come and learn more about the global climate change crisis. We all can be part of the solution. All of us can get involved.”
