The Katherine Causey Award
Established in memory of Katherine Causey by her children, Ralph S. Eberly, Clark R. Eberly, and Deirdre Eberly Lashgari, the fund provides financial support for deserving young women students from rural Alamance, Guilford or Randolph counties in North Carolina. Preference is for women students from these counties who have declared a major of Biology or English or a Concentration in Writing, Editing or Journalism. The university scholarship committee shall select students who have demonstrated academic, artistic, or scientific achievement, and financial worthiness
The Gardner Women’s Track Scholarship
Champion and Sara Lee Corporation named Susie Gardner, North Carolina NCAA Woman of the Year for 1993. Along with the honor, the recipient’s institution, WCU, received a cash award from Champion. This award will go to an overall outstanding student athlete.
The Gerri Wright Garrett Scholarship Fund
This $500 renewable scholarship is designed to assist students from Swain, Graham, and Macon Counties in attending Western Carolina University. Preference will be shown to non-traditional women students from Swain County. The recipient must demonstrate financial need and have maintained a 2.5 GPA.
Glaxo Women in Science Scholarship Fund
This fund was established in 1993 by Glaxo, Inc., through its foundation. WCU was one of the seven UNC schools selected to participate. The purpose is to recognize outstanding scholarship, provide incentive for women science students and to provide students with a woman scientist mentor at Glaxo, Inc. Students must maintain 3.0 or better. Students who remain eligible will be given preference in receiving this award in subsequent years.
The Linda Elaine Glenn Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship award was established to honor the memory of Linda Elaine Glenn, who was a student at WCU majoring in Psychology in the College of Education and Allied Professions. Entering and continuing junior and senior female students majoring in psychology or education are eligible for the scholarship. Preference will be given to students majoring in psychology. Candidates must meet all general university admission requirements or be current student in good standing. The amount of the award varies.
The Dee Ann Memorial Scholarship Fund
This fund provides financial support in the amount of an instate tuition scholarship for female varsity tennis players enrolled at Western Carolina University. Applicants for the scholarship must be members of the women’s varsity tennis team. Selection is based on academic achievement, talent, potential and overall participation in social, civic, and school activities. Preference will be given to upper class women who have maintained a grade point average of 3.0 or above and have expressed a desire to attend graduate school.
The Alice Mathews Scholarship Fund
This scholarship is designed to assist history majors attending Western Carolina University. Preference will be given to a female student. The recipient must be a full-time student at Western Carolina University and maintain a high GPA, both in major courses and overall. This award will be divided equally between the fall and spring semester.
The Betty Peele Leadership Fund
This endowment honors Betty Peele’s service to WCU and women’s athletics by providing a scholarship of at least $500 per year to a female athlete who shows leadership on and off the court or field of play. The criteria for this award include demonstrating outstanding leadership on the court or field of play; an overall GPA of 3.0; and participation in a NCAA recognized women’s sport at WCU.
The Freda Rayburn Scholarship
The purpose of this scholarship endowment is to identify women who have leadership potential in business and provide opportunities for them to participate in education for careers in business. Eligibility for the award will be based on scholarly achievement, university community participation, promise for success in business, and demonstrated leadership potential
Albert and June Sanborn Scholarship for Women’s Golf
Preference for this scholarship is participation on WCU’s Women’s Golf team.
The Sue and Jack Wakeley Scholar-Athlete Award
The purpose of the endowment is to provide a scholarship each year of at least $250 to one female and to one male athlete in track, field, or cross country meet, or in the most important meet of the year, should there be no Conference meet. To qualify for the scholarship, the applicant must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and must have scored points in a Conference meet, or in the most important meet of the year, should there be no Conference meet.
