WCU is a University of North Carolina Campus
M.A.T. in Middle Grades Education
This graduate program is designed for students who have earned an undergraduate degree in a field outside of education. Depending on the major, students may need to complete a set of pre-requisite courses in one of the licensure areas for middle grades: language arts, science, social science, or mathematics.

Successful completion of the program will lead to a Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) degree with a concentration in middle grades and recommendation for Advanced Competencies licensure from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction for teaching in the middle grades.

Candidates for the M.A.T. are also required to successfully complete a portfolio that demonstrates advanced competencies.

Some of the courses required for licensure in the middle grades and for the M.A.T. degree may be earned through the alternative licensure program. For more information, visit WCU’s Office of Alternative Licensure website.
