     Communication can be a challenge in both romantic relationships and friendships. Through exploration of several theories about the approaches that people take to their interpersonal relationships, we will work on ways to be clearer in communication. Tips to successful relationships from some of the top relationship experts will be presented and discussed.

Tuesday, 13th - 7-9pm, UC Grandroom: "A Call to Men" Training Program (Committed to Ending Violence Against Women) - REACH of Jackson County, WCU Women's Center, and the Department of Social Work at WCU is hosting a community workshop. This workshop will facilitate discussion and education on issues surrounding violence against women, and what you can do to end it! The guest speaker will be Tony Porter. Monday, 26th - "Debunking the 'Mean Girls' Myth" Workshop: Red Flags for Unhealthy Relationships. Part 2 of the Western GLOW Series - 5:30 to 7pm, Women's Center
     Women are often portrayed as nasty, vindictive, and hurtful to one another. However, relationships can provide opportunities for sisterhood and real emotional intimacy. This discussion will focus on red flags for unhealthy friendships and romantic relationships, including relational aggression (gossiping, social exclusion), myths surrounding the "mean girls" image, and ways to foster healthy relationships.
Friday, 30th 5pm - Saturday, 31st 4pm, Standing Indian, NC: Women In The Wilderness-
This is an opportunity for the women of WCU to network and enjoy the outdoors, as well as the company. Learn how to cook dinner on a camp stove, set up camp and how to have a good time in the mountains! Sign-up Deadline: Wednesday, Oct. 28. For more information call 828-227-3633.

Journalist and screen-writer Sharon D. Johnson, M. A., will discuss key essays by Zora Neale Hurston (1891-1960), the most published African-American woman of her time.

Friday, 20th - Saturday, 21st -  "Fight for Equal Rights Fest 2009" - All Day, UC Lawn
Monday, 30th - "I'm not a Bitch!" Workshop: Job Equity and Negotiation Skills in the Workplace. #3 of Western GLOW Series - 5:30 - 7pm, Women's Center
     The line between assertive and aggressive communication can be a tightrope, and the stereotypes that women face can be landmines to success. This workshop will focus on models of assertive communication, and will address some of the professional tactics that women can utilize to further their professional image.

December

Monday, 7th - "You First" Workshop: A Gift to Yourself. #4 of the Western GLOW Series - 5:30 - 7pm, Women's Center
    Is it selfish to make yourself your own top priority? It's easy to get so busy with class, activities, and other people's wants and needs that it's hard to distinguish what is important for YOU. In this workshop we will redefine the idea of "being selfish" and explore ways to practice healthy self care.
