Bruce Henderson, professor of psychology at Western Carolina University, is serving on the Scholars Council formed to support and advise the University of North Carolina Tomorrow Commission.

The commission is assessing what North Carolinians need most from their university in the next 20 years in order to recommend priorities for the university system to the Board of Governors. Aiding them is the Scholars Council, which is composed of top faculty from each university within the system and from different areas of expertise.

Henderson (pictured above right) has served as a member of the psychology faculty at Western since 1978. He has researched state comprehensive universities and authored the book “Teaching at the People’s University.”
 
As part of the Scholars Council, he has conducted research, prepared reports and helped frame questions for commission meetings. He and other members have led and recorded small group discussions at community listening forums, which averaged about 300 attendees.

"What has impressed me is the great respect for the university system held across the state," said Henderson. "People from every kind of background trust the university system and look for leadership from the university in dealing with the problems of the state."
