College of Business offers graduate seminar series

The College of Business at Western Carolina University is offering a series of graduate-level seminar courses during the fall, spring and summer semesters, beginning Friday, Nov. 9.

The first course, titled “Accounting and Performance Measurement in a Global Environment,” will cover accounting standards for multinational organizations and those that compete globally. Other topics of the course include the effects of currency fluctuations on enterprise risk, how transfer pricing and the related tax implications affect performance evaluations of foreign subsidiaries, and key differences between the United States and international financial reporting standards, said Susan Swanger, associate professor of accounting and master of accountancy program director.

“While designed with our current master of accountancy students in mind, the course is open to students in other degree programs and nondegree-seeking individuals, as well,” said Swanger, who will teach the course with Larry Seese of East Carolina University. “Members of the general business community who have toyed with the idea of graduate education can try it out, without applying to a specific program of study and without committing to a traditional 15-week class. Also, professionals with certifications, such as certified public accountant, receive 15 hours of continuing education credit.”

Participants will meet at the Holiday Inn near the Asheville Airport on Friday, Nov. 9, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided, and follow-up readings, case studies and a final assessment will be online. The course carries one hour of graduate-level credit, which may later be applied toward a degree.

Other courses in the series are “Forensic Techniques for Controllers and Auditors” in spring 2008 and “Business Ethics” in summer 2008.

Those who wish to enroll should contact Swanger at (828) 227-3525 or swanger@wcu.edu prior to Friday, Nov. 2.
