In Spring 2006, the Western Theatre in Education Company presented Young Cherokee, a play for young audiences, by Kathryn Schultz Miller. The Eastern Band of Cherokee has played a significant role in the artistic and cultural development of Western North Carolina and continues to do so today. Cherokee Elders and artists provided wisdom, support, and artistic vision to the development of this production.
Young Cherokee deals with a young boy, Chosen One, on his quest for manhood as he learns to honor and respect traditional values and lessons of life. It is a play for young audiences with a powerful theme based in stewardship. It is fun and fast-paced, targeting students in grades 1-8. Students participate in the performance as sound effects specialists. Curriculum materials are available to teachers so that they can connect the play to the classroom.
