Several area youths recently attended Western Carolina University’s Construction Camp for Middle Schoolers hosted by The Kimmel School of Construction Management and Technology, and the Division of Educational Outreach.
The sixth- through eighth-graders explored construction of homes, roads, buildings and bridges through a variety of activities.
“The camp was a huge success,” said Gary Burke, camp leader and assistant professor of construction management at Western.
“The program provided real-world lessons and activities for the students that also helped educate them about the construction industry,” said Burke. “They learned by creating, molding and problem-solving using the latest construction technology and equipment.”
Students also examined the planning of a construction project and the limitations of locations, environmental concerns and regulatory agencies.
Attending the camp were Jared Poteet, Warren LeMay, Duncan LeMay and Tyler Ashe of Cullowhee; Ethan Swartzentruber, Weston Macke and Connor Galloway of Sylva; and Wesley Burrell of Hendersonville.
The Construction Camp for Middle Schoolers is planned again for next summer. For more information about Western’s youth camps, contact Susan Fouts at (828) 227-3688.
